It is OK to do your own thing in some situations, but the idea that OpenPGP should incorporate the idea of "optional" modes should be resisted. Such modes are only helpful in negotiating protocols like TLS.
 Adding a new, incompatible mode, to the OpenPGP ecosystem turns out to be a difficult political problem that greatly overshadows any mere technical issues.
